The small-business website checklist for 2026

Nine things that separate a website that brings in customers from one that just exists — from speed and WhatsApp to search and trust.

For most local businesses, a website isn’t a brochure any more — it’s the first conversation with a customer. Here are the nine things we look at first whenever we build or review a site for a local business.

1. It loads fast on a mid-range phone

Most of your visitors are on mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. If your homepage takes more than a few seconds to show something useful, many will leave before it does. Compress images, avoid heavy page builders where possible, and test on a real phone.

2. The first screen answers three questions

What do you do? Where? How do I reach you? If a visitor has to scroll to find any of those, you’re losing them. Put your offer, your area and a clear call to action above the fold.

3. One tap to talk

Indian customers love to message first. A click-to-chat WhatsApp button and a tap-to-call phone number will usually outperform a long contact form. Keep the form too, but make it short.

4. Your Google Business Profile matches your site

Name, address, phone and hours should be identical on your website and your Google Business Profile. Consistency helps local search and stops customers turning up when you’re closed.

5. Real proof, not stock photos

Photos of your actual shop, products and team build more trust than any stock image. Pair them with genuine customer reviews — with names and places — and you’ve done more for conversion than any redesign.

6. Every page has a job

A services page should lead to an enquiry. A product page should lead to a purchase or a call. If a page doesn’t point the visitor to a next step, give it one.

7. Search basics are in place

Each page needs a clear, unique title and description, sensible headings and readable URLs. Add a sitemap and connect Google Search Console so you can see how people find you. None of this is glamorous; all of it compounds.

8. You can measure it

Install privacy-respecting analytics and track the actions that matter — calls, WhatsApp taps, form submissions. Otherwise you’re redesigning based on guesses.

9. It’s easy to keep fresh

A website that still says “© 2023” quietly tells visitors you might not be around. Choose a setup that lets you update offers, prices and posts without calling a developer every time.
