How to build an MVP that investors and customers take seriously

A step-by-step guide to scoping, designing and building a minimum viable product — what to include, what to leave out and how to launch fast without cutting quality.

A minimum viable product is not a cheap version of your idea. It is the smallest product that proves your most important assumption — that people want this, will use it and will pay for it. Built well, an MVP wins early customers and gives investors evidence rather than slides.

Step 1: Name the assumption you are testing

Write one sentence: “We believe [type of customer] will [do something] because [reason].” Every feature in the MVP should help test that sentence. Everything else waits.

Step 2: Map the core journey

Sketch the single path a user takes from discovering your product to getting value from it. For a marketplace, that might be search → book → pay → review. That journey is your MVP.

Step 3: Cut ruthlessly

Good candidates to postpone:

  • Multiple user roles and complex permissions
  • Advanced settings and personalisation
  • Native apps on every platform (a responsive web app or one cross-platform app may be enough)
  • Automation of rare tasks you can do manually at first

Step 4: Design before you build

A clickable prototype, tested with five to ten target users, will reveal confusing flows before a line of code is written. It is the cheapest change you will ever make.

Step 5: Choose a stack that can grow

An MVP should be quick to build and a sound foundation. Choose mainstream, well-supported technologies, set up automated tests and CI from day one, and avoid shortcuts in security and data handling — those are expensive to fix later.

Step 6: Instrument everything

Add analytics for the key steps of your journey, plus error monitoring. You are building the MVP to learn — make sure you can measure what users actually do.

Step 7: Launch, learn, iterate

Ship to a small group, talk to users every week, and plan short iterations based on what you learn. The goal is a clear signal: double down, adjust or pivot.

Working with a development partner

An experienced partner can take you from idea to launched MVP in weeks rather than months, with design, development and QA in one team. At AkMo we build MVPs for founders and innovation teams worldwide — see our web application and mobile app development services, or share your idea for a free consultation.
