How much does it cost to build a mobile app? The factors that really matter

What drives the cost of building an iOS or Android app — features, design, integrations, platforms and team location — and how to plan a budget that does not surprise you.

“How much will my app cost?” is the first question almost every founder and product manager asks — and the honest answer is it depends on what the app needs to do. Rather than quote a number without context, this article explains the factors that drive cost so you can plan with confidence.

1. Scope and features

Every screen, rule and edge case takes time to design, build and test. Typical building blocks include:

  • Sign-up, login and user profiles
  • Payments and subscriptions
  • Real-time features such as chat, tracking or live updates
  • Offline mode and data sync
  • Admin dashboards for your team
  • Notifications, analytics and crash reporting

The most effective way to control cost is to define a minimum viable product — the smallest set of features that delivers real value — and ship that first.

2. Design complexity

A clean app built on a solid design system costs far less than one with custom illustrations, complex animation and many unique layouts. Good UX design is not a luxury, though: a clickable prototype tested with users before development is one of the best ways to avoid expensive rework.

3. Platforms

Building for iOS and Android with a cross-platform framework such as Flutter or React Native usually costs much less than two separate native apps. See Flutter vs React Native for how to choose.

4. Integrations and backend

Apps rarely live alone. Connecting to payment gateways, CRMs, ERPs, maps or your own APIs adds work — and if you need a new backend, admin panel and cloud infrastructure, those are often as large as the app itself.

5. Quality and security

Automated tests, security reviews, performance testing and accessibility all add effort up front — and save far more after launch. Apps handling personal or financial data need extra care.

6. Team location and model

Where your team is based has a large effect on budget. An experienced offshore team in India can deliver the same quality as an onshore agency at significantly lower rates, especially when it brings its own QA and design.

7. After launch

Budget for ongoing support and maintenance: operating-system updates, bug fixes, store compliance changes and new features. A common rule of thumb is to plan a yearly maintenance budget as a meaningful percentage of the initial build.

How to get an accurate estimate

  1. Write down your core user journeys — who uses the app and what they need to accomplish.
  2. List must-have versus nice-to-have features.
  3. Note any systems the app must connect to.
  4. Ask for a short discovery phase to produce a prototype, architecture and fixed estimate.
